Mother of two enrols in class one

DAUDKHEL: A 25-year-old mother of two enrolled in primary school along with her children on Saturday.

Daud Khel resident 25-year-old Asma enrolled in class 1 with her two children. When the woman was asked by the school teacher about the reason for her enrolment she said that she had always wanted to go to school but her parents had forbidden it.

“…I told my husband how much I regretted never having been to school myself,” she said. “He told me that I should enrol also,” Asma said, adding “I am very lucky, most men would forbid such a thing,” she said.

World’s Youngest ARCast Programmer

Arfa Karim, a promising software programmer from Faisalabad, Pakistan, is believed to be the youngest Microsoft Certified Professional in the world.

The situation illustrates “another side” of Pakistan, said Anand Yang, director of the University of Washington’s Jackson School of International Studies. “That’s another reason to celebrate someone like her.”

Pakistani man initiates Christmas supper

Ismail Mohammed, who grew up in Pakistan and now resides in Greenfield Park, is a retired CBC accountant who suggested to sponsor the annual Christmas Eve supper at the Old Brewery Mission in Montreal, Canada.

It was in a spirit of giving that fellow members of his South Shore mosque contributed $2,000 and spent two hours serving Christmas Eve supper to more than 300 people.

Pakistani scholar wins chemistry award

KARACHI: Pakistani Scholar Dr. Hina Siddiqui won the best “Oral Presentation Award” in the 11th Eurasia conference on Chemical Sciences. The international conference was held in Jordon from Oct.6 to Oct.10, 2010.

Dr. Siddiqui’s presentation was declared as one of the top three oral presentations in the conference where over 200 scientists delivered their presentations from 69 countries.

Pakistani IT firm tops Blackberry apps

ISLAMABAD (AFP) – Photo editing software developed by Pakistani technology firm Five Rivers became the best selling paid-for application for the Blackberry, the firm said Wednesday.

The application “has been in the top five paid applications for quite a while now and on Sunday made its way to the number one spot.”

Pakistani awarded ‘Student of the Year’

In 2009 after an initial evaluation, Sadia Irfan was selected for the YES scholarship —- a one-year programme to live and study in the US for free — as a “cultural and goodwill ambassador.”

While there, she was awarded several awards and certificates while getting recognised by Villa Rica High School (VRHS) Georgia for being “the student of the year,” as she maintained her G.P.A of 3.8 throughout.

Pakistan Army Wins Gold Medal

At an event organized by the British Army for world militaries to compete in toughness, with 750 soldiers participating worldwide, Pakistani soldiers bagged the Gold Medal for being the toughest soldiers capable of patrolling in the most difficult conditions.

The Team was so advanced in meeting targets that the organizers requested them to slow down at times so that competing teams could catch up.

Haroon Khan wins first int’l bout in CWG

Amir Khan’s younger brother Haroon is hoping to make his mark in boxing for Pakistan at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi after the 19-year-old impressed in a 12-1 third-round stoppage win over Sunday Elias of Tanzania.

“I’ve wanted to box for Britain at the Olympics ever since Amir won silver in Athens,” he said recently.

“When I went over to Pakistan, they were offering me a house and a car with a driver if I wanted to stay there.”

Cleaner wins acclaim

A Pakistani hotel employee has won acclaim after handing in over $50,000 (£33,000) in cash that had been left behind by a guest.

Essa Khan, 51, discovered the money in $100 notes left in the room of a Japanese worker at the Serena Hotel in Gilgit. Mr Khan, who earns about 21,000 rupees ($235; £153) a month, says he never considered keeping the money. He has been invited to receive an award from a state governor for his honesty.
